October officially “Fair Trade Month”

Unless you have been living under a rock, you have probably heard the words “Fair Trade”, and yet not a lot of people truly know the meaning of the phrase.

In a brief explanation the words sustainability best represent the mission of the movement. Among all the media attention “Occupy Wall Street” has been receiving, “Fair Trade” has slowly been cultivating it’s own cult following social phenomenon.

“Fair Trade” is essentially allowing  producers in developing countries create healthier and more conducive trading conditions and promote….well.. “fair” treatment from authoritative figures within respective governments.

This world-wide approach began in the mid-1940s when both North American and European countries began helping organizations within underdeveloped communities promote and sell their authentic crafts to surrounding markets.

Fair Trade is an exchanging partnership that contributes to sustainable developments by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers. Fair Trade practices assist in creating more equal exchanges between consumers and producers. Funds from Fair Trade practices solely support social, economic and environmental development projects in these poverty-stricken regions.
